Twi

In central and southern Ghana, you will find the roots of a Twi, a member of the Akan language group. Alongside other major languages, it is spoken by some 18 million speakers in the region and elsewhere, and especially by members of the Akan people, which is one of the seventeen major ethnicities of Ghana.

Twi as a language may refer to several mutually intelligible languages of the region, including Asante Akuapem. Although British Colonial power introduced English as the standard language for many proceedings in Ghana, Twi persevered as a strong representation of culture and community in the region, and continues to be present in media and in everyday life today.
